우리는 민주주의를 열망하는 미얀마의 시민·학생과 연대한다.
2021년 2월 1일 미얀마의 군부는 쿠데타를 일으켜 합법 정부를 거꾸러뜨리고 권력을 찬탈했다. 21세기에 벌어졌다고 도저히 믿을 수 없는 이 사태에 미얀마의 학생들과 시민들은 거리로 나서 군사 쿠데타를 규탄했다. 우리가 교실에서 만나는 평범한 학생과 다름없는 14세 중학생 소년이 군인의 총격으로 사망했다. 그리고 띤 뉘에 이 선생님과 “모든 게 다 잘 될 거야”라고 쓰인 티셔츠를 입고 민주화를 외치던 치알 신도 군부와 경찰의 총에 희생되었다. 우리는 이러한 시민 학살에 분노하며 미얀마의 군과 경찰을 강력히 규탄한다.
현재 미얀마의 상황은 과거 대한민국 민주화 운동의 과정과 닮았다. 시민을 향해 곤봉을 내려치는 군인의 모습은 5.18 민주화 운동 당시의 광주와 다르지 않다. 죽음을 무릅쓰고 시위에 나서는 학생들의 모습에서 4.19혁명 당시 어머니에게 편지를 쓰고 나가 돌아오지 못한 진영숙이 떠오른다. 총을 겨눈 군인들에게 꽃을 나눠주는 시민들의 모습은 6월 민주 항쟁의 한 장면 같다. 과거 미얀마의 8888항쟁에서 많은 학생과 시민들이 민주주의를 외치다 희생된 역사를 우리는 기억하고 있다. 뼈아픈 희생 속에서도 단결된 시민들의 힘으로 민주주의를 쟁취한 대한민국처럼 미얀마 시민들도 결국 승리할 것이다. 우리는 미얀마 학생과 시민들의 민주 회복에 대한 열망을 지지하며 그들과 연대할 것을 다짐한다.
우리는 역사 수업에서 독재 정권에 저항한 대한민국 민주화의 과정을 이야기해 왔다. 얼마나 많은 시민이 민주주의를 위해 목숨을 바쳐 싸웠는지, 우리가 지금 누리는 안락함은 그들의 치열한 싸움의 결과물임을 강조했다. 우리에게 교실은 실천의 공간이자 소통과 연대의 공간이다. 우리는 역사 교육자로서 학생들과 함께 나눌 교육자료를 만들어 미얀마와 민주 세상으로 통하는 창으로 삼겠다. 또한 학생들과 미얀마 사태의 본질을 학습하고 토론하는 교실을 미얀마의 민주화로 들어서는 문으로 만들겠다. 그리고 물리적인 환경을 넘어 다양한 통로를 이용하여 우리가 배우고 가르친 민주주의가 미얀마와 세계에 전달될 수 있도록 노력하겠다.

We are in solidarity with citizens and students of Myanmar
who yearn for democracy.
On February 1, 2021, Myanmar's legitimate government was overthrown in a military and the power was usurped. In the unbelievable event that occurred in the 21st century, Myanmar students and citizens went to the streets to condemn the military coup. A 14-year-old middle school boy, like the ordinary student we meet in the classroom, was shot dead by a soldier. Also, Thin Nye Yee, a middle school teacher and Kyal Sin who shouted for democracy wearing a T-shirt with "Everything will be OK" were killed by the military and police. We are outraged by this slaughter of citizens and strongly condemn the military and police in Myanmar.
The current situation in Myanmar resembles the process of the Korean democratization movement in the past. The appearance of a soldier clubbing citizens is no different from that of Gwangju during the May 18 Democratization Movement. From the image of students who risked death and protested, we recall Jin Young-sook, who went to the street after writing the letter to her mother and could not return during the April 19 Revolution. The scene in which citizens handing out flowers to soldiers who aimed a gun at them is like that of the June Democracy Movement. We remember the history of the sacrifices of many students and citizens shouting democracy during the 8888 Uprising in Myanmar. The citizens of Myanmar will gain the upper hand in the end, just like the Republic of Korea, which achieved democracy with the power of united citizens despite painful sacrifices. We support the aspirations of Myanmar students and citizens to restore democracy and pledge to be in solidarity with them.
We have talked about the process of democratization of the Republic of Korea, which resisted dictatorship in history class. We stressed how many citizens fought their lives for democracy and that the comfort we now enjoy is the result of their fierce fighting. For us, the classroom is a space of practice, communication, and solidarity as well. As history educators, we will create learning materials to share with our students and make them a window into Myanmar and a democratic world. In addition, we will make classrooms where students learn and discuss the nature of the Myanmar crisis as doors to the democratization of Myanmar. Furthermore, we will strive to convey the democracy we have learned and taught to Myanmar and the world by using various channels beyond the physical environment.
One. We are enraged at killing citizens in Myanmar and condemn the Myanmar military and police.
One. We support Myanmar citizens’ aspiration for democracy recovery and are in a solidarity with them.
One. We teach classes as practices in which the history of democratization in Myanmar is discussed.
